The City of Grand Prairie TX
Grand Prairie is a part of the Mid-Cities region within the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Populated by more than 175 thousands of people, the city of Grand Prairie TX is the 15th most populous city in Texas.
The city occupies 81.1 square miles area of which 11.08% of the area is water. There are two rivers flowing through this city, the Trinity River and Johnson Creek that caused a lot of flooding in the surrounding areas. However, after the Army Corps of Engineers started the project to straighten the channel the damage of flooding can finally can be reduced.
This city has a very interesting story started in 1863 when Alexander McRae Dechman who originated from Birdville traded his oxen and wagons plus $200 in Confederate money to buy 239.5 acres of land on the east of Trinity River and another 100 acres on the west of the river. He called this area “Dechman” after his own name. However, after having some difficulties as he tried to build a home on his new property, he returned to Birdville before finally joined the Civil War.
To make it official, he filed a town plat with Dallas County for 50 acres of the land in 1867. But after the war, he didn’t return to Dechman, instead he was back to Birdville and then moved to Houston after he sold the farm. Unfortunate for him, a yellow fever broke out in the area at that time forcing his family to moved to Bryan.
In order to have a railroad through the town, Dechman traded half of his property on the prairie to the T&P Railroad. The Railroad depot later named “Dechman”.
In 1877 the first post office was opened in Dechman, but since the united States Postal Service couldn’t read the post office opening form, they named the post office “Deckman” instead of “Dechman”. Another confusion about the name was when the T&P Railroad used the name “Grand Prairie” based on the area map drawn between 1850-1858 that named the area “the grand prairie of Texas”. Later on, the “Deckman” post office also changed its name into Grand Prairie.
