The earliest settlers came to this area from Kentucky and Tennessee in the 1840s. For a decade, the settlement was concentrated around the Richland College in present day. When a railroad was built on the northwest of the settlement after the Civil War, the people’s activities began to center around the railroad and so did the settlement. The railroad became a very important part of the people’s lives in this area, they even named the city after the railroad contractor, E.H. Richardson.
The population started to grow significantly after the Texas Electric Railway that connected Richardson to Fort Worth, Corsicana, Waco, and Denison began operating in 1908. With more people, the city started to develop and build more infrastructures such as school in 1914 and the Red Brick Road in 1924 (known as Greenville Avenue at present day). This road boosted the economy of the city, it brought more people to do business and also increased property values because a lot of these people decided to move to Richardson after they saw the opportunity this place had to offer.
After the town was incorporated in 1925 until the 1940s, the population was still under 1000. But after the World War II during the population boom era, the population had a major increase. In 1950 the population was approximately 1,300. As the city continued to grow in economy with significant gains in land values, big companies such as Texas Instruments started to do business in this area, more infrastructures being built, more and more people move to this city.
